Xubuntu on the Jan '07 APC Mag DVD

APC Magazine has Xubuntu 6.10 on its January 2007 edition Cover DVD.

It works like the LiveCD (except it's a DVD), booting to the live environment with the Install icon on the desktop.

Xubuntu uses the Xfce desktop environment which is less resource intensive than Gnome (Ubuntu) and KDE (Kubuntu), making it a good choice for older/less-powerful hardware and thin-client networks. More information here.

WA Timezone Data Fix (Interim)

At the time of writing, there is currently no official fix to timezone data for the trial of Daylight Savings in Western Australia. However James Henstridge has posted a fix in the comments to the bug report which is here.

Also Matt (indulis) has posted a file and instructions here.

Meeting Time Changed to 0900UTC

Daylight saving has now taken effect in most of the Eastern states. In addition, there is a high possibility that Western Australia will also have daylight saving within a few months. This also then affects our IRC meeting times, as these are based on UTC.

This was raised at the last meeting, and the decision was made to try moving the meetings forward an hour, to 0900UTC, which will keep the meetings at 8.00pm EST. Therefore, the next meeting, on November 13, will commence at 0900UTC.

Ubuntu Kiosks at Sydney Airport

If the rumours are true, the free Internet terminals at Sydney Airport's International Terminal run Ubuntu.

Just the way to while away the hours for those inevitable flight delays.

Bill Clinton says "All you need is Ubuntu"

Well he was actually referring to the African concept of community. That's what the distribution that is "Linux for human beings" is named after.

But we'll take it! :-)

Promotion that money just can't buy.

BBC News online has the story.
